1) Did you always want to be, or see yourself getting into the wellness industry?
My passion for the wellness industry started when I was about 15. I watched my mother abuse her body through extreme dieting, smoking, overworking, negative self-talk, etc… and I knew there had to be a better way to live. I started working out, mostly so I could make the very competitive volleyball team in high school, but also because I loved to feel strong both physically and mentally. I fell in love with lifting weights and step aerobics! Yes, step aerobics dates me, but it was so fun and started my desire to be a fitness instructor.
I got certified to teach group fitness when I was 18 and have been teaching now for 31 years! I have taught just about every format you can imagine, but just this year decided to get my yoga certification.
It was later, after having my children that I really dove into nutrition. I had gained a lot of weight through pregnancy, but also because I was extremely depressed. I had followed advice from a family member to get “a real job”. I followed that advice and found myself as a financial advisor. I hated my job, it was creating so many problems in my life. Fortunately, I was able to leave that profession and stay home with the kids for a while to figure out my next step. I went back to work as a fitness instructor and personal trainer.
During this time I was able to use a balanced diet and exercise to lose over 65 pounds and have kept it off over 21 years now. This personal body change catapulted my career as a fitness trainer and nutrition coach. I opened my fitness studio in 2009 to follow my dream. In 2016 I decided to close my in-person studio and move online. I feel blessed to have not only the education and professional experience, but also the personal experience of transformation.
Now I am helping women look inside to find the answers they need to transform their external world. I help women with my program called NOURISH Academy. In this program we take a deep dive into old patterns and limiting beliefs before we start working on nutrition and movement. I use transformative Breathwork as a tool to guide my clients to create real, lasting change.
2) What specifically about your offerings sets your business apart from other coaches?
My approach to transformation is to start on the inside. Instead of working with women on the external only - diet, exercise, supplements, etc… I start by guiding them to look at their past experiences and how they have impacted their behavior and therefore results. I have flipped the script on body change. I am not a quick-fix coach, I am a transformation coach that helps women stop the self-sabotage cycle and guides them to their most authentic, best life.
3) How do you balance family/work-life as being an entrepreneur, partner, and/or parent?
I am very fortunate to have a husband that has supported me no matter what. He has seen me go through so many shifts in my business! Without the support of my husband, I am not sure where I would be now. I am also a big planner. I love to time block my calendar. If it’s on my calendar, it happens. That includes me time, family time, meal times, even shower times. I believe in creating “appointments” with all areas of my life. This has been so helpful in creating balance between work and life.

4) What is the part about your coaching business that lights you up the most?
The thing that lights me up the most is having someone finally see their worth. Too many of us spend our time looking externally for our worth - the number on the scale, the size of our pants, the amount in our bank account, the car we drive, but when someone can see their own light and learn to shine it outward, that is the best feeling to me. To help women get there, it may be through guided breathwork, or strength training, or even helping them get off the dieting cycle - no matter what they need, my goal is to help them see that they are worthy right now.
5) Do you have any advice or tips for women wanting to start their own business?
Be true to your own vision. For too long I allowed other people to dictate what my business should look like. Every time I followed the advice or opinions of others without consulting my vision, I was led astray and found myself way out of alignment and very unhappy. Before jumping in, have a goal, a vision, and believe and trust in your intuition and passion. The only way you will get to where you want to be is to follow your own voice and stay true to yourself.
6) What made you take the leap into entrepreneurship?
I was working at a women-only gym having the best time of my life. One morning I pulled up to the gym to teach my cycle class and the gym was locked up and closed for good! I was shocked and felt devastated. I had always dreamed of owning a small boutique fitness studio, so this sudden change gave me the motivation I needed to take the leap! I opened my studio about 6 months later. Before my studio I was always starting new projects and little businesses - I did boot camps at parks and schools, I even owned a cookie baking business for a while (that may be why I gained so much weight - ha ha). I love to be my own boss and I love having the freedom to create. I also like knowing that my success is up to me.
