The Beauty of Boudoir

Ladies! I'm so excited to highlight local business owner Kayla...of Boudoir by Kayla. She is such a joy to connect with and is super passionate about her profession! Read below to get to know more about her personal life and her journey to Boudoir photography! <3

1) Did you always want to be, or see yourself getting into the photography industry?

Photography wasn’t the plan. But I have friends that have told me they remember me taking pictures of everything when we were growing up. I really didn't know what I wanted to do in life, so I got my BBA from Greensboro College. Then my husband, who I was dating at the time, surprised me with an upgraded camera. And I decided that I wanted to start capturing senior portraits. I wanted to celebrate those who were graduating & going through this milestone in life. When I started learning more about the business side of photography, I came across boudoir & fell in love! The portraits were gorgeous, but it was so incredibly empowering & I found in time, just how healing it truly was too. After a few years of learning about boudoir, I knew this was where I was meant to be.

2) What specifically about your offerings sets your business apart from other boudoir photographers?

Most people hear boudoir & think it's just dressing up in lingerie & pretty pictures. But I focus on the why. Every session here is deeply intentional. We talk about what’s brought you to this point—what you’re shedding, what you’re reclaiming, what kind of connection you want to feel. I offer pre-session intention work for solo clients & connection-building for couples because I believe this work starts before you even come in for session day.

I’ve put in a lot of effort to create a welcoming, safe space. My studio is trauma-aware, body-liberated, & centered on autonomy. Most of the people coming to me for a boudoir experience are those who are going through a journey with their body (postpartum moms, weight loss surgery, cancer warriors), reclaiming their autonomy (sexual assault survivors, trauma survivors, battling eating disorders), or rebuilding after a major life shift—divorce, grief, toxic relationships, or burnout.

Some are here to face what they’ve been avoiding in the mirror. Others are here to feel like themselves again. Some just need a reminder that their body still belongs to them.

Whoever walks through my door, they’re not just looking for pretty pictures, they’re stepping into a version of themselves that’s been buried under expectations, shame, trauma, or self-doubt. I guide them through a deeply personal experience that’s curated for them. Whether it's a woman on a healing journey or a couple madly in love, I hold space for these beautiful soul-inspiring connections. I see every client as a work of art & they leave knowing it too.

3) How do you balance family/work-life as being an entrepreneur, partner, and/or parent?

Honestly, it's tough & most of the time, I'm not balanced. I'm still coming to terms with my perfectionism & I'm really hard on myself when I don't get all the things done (hello everlasting entrepreneur to-do list). But one of the things that helps the most, is my partner. My husband & I have been together for over 15 years now & he helps reel me back in when I feel like I'm drowning. Counseling has also helped so much. I try to make sure to take time for myself when I'm getting burnt out. Even if I have to schedule it on the calendar, I know that quiet time at the studio, taking the occasional nap or scheduling a massage is a must.

4) What is the part about your boudoir business that lights you up the most?

There's so much! But the one thing about being an entrepreneur is finding your people! I love meeting new people & seeing how they light up about their passions. I always enjoy hearing their stories & where they've come from. But the one thing that will never get old, is seeing the switch flip when they get to see themselves without the self criticism & have a "that's me?!" moment. I will always love setting off the ripple effect of badassery & power.

5) What made you take the leap into entrepreneurship?

Like most, I tried juggling a full-time office job while also running a business at first. But as my business started growing & I had my daughter, I was losing the keep-up game. I knew I wasn't the type to sit at a desk Monday through Friday on someone else's clock. I finally decided that I wanted to follow my passion & I jumped in. I decided to go full-time with photography, quit my office job & found a studio. I get to do what I love while making my own schedule, homeschooling my kiddo & meeting amazing people!

6) Do you have any advice or tips for women wanting to start their own business?

If you have the drive & passion, then do it! It will be hard, but having a good support system, remembering your why & keeping a list of accomplishments close by, will definitely help. Also mindset & seeing "setbacks" as moments of learning & not failures, is everything. You’re going to mess up, feel unsure, & question yourself more than once—but that doesn’t mean you’re not built for this. It just means you’re growing. Learn to take imperfect action. Stay curious. And trust that your vision wouldn’t have been placed on your heart if you weren’t capable of bringing it to life.

Let your inner beauty shine through...speaking from personal experience, you will leave feeling like your most beautiful & confident self!
