For Tamika Harris, founder of Sound Mind Financial Solutions, the journey into financial services began with a deeply personal experience that changed the way she viewed financial protection, family security, and planning for the unexpected.

A United States Navy veteran, Registered Nurse, licensed minister, author, domestic violence advocate, and licensed life insurance broker, Tamika has spent much of her life serving others.

Today, she brings those experiences together with a mission to help individuals and families better understand their financial options and build stronger foundations for the future.

Through Sound Mind Financial Solutions, Tamika focuses on financial education, life insurance, generational wealth, and helping families make informed decisions about protecting what matters most.

In this featured Q&A, Tamika shares more about the life-changing experience that inspired her work, the financial misconceptions she sees families facing, and why she believes education can be one of the most powerful tools for creating a lasting legacy.

From a Life-Changing Experience to a Mission of Financial Protection

You wear many hats, author, U.S. veteran, minister, domestic violence advocate, and life insurance broker. Can you share your journey and what led you to the work you're doing today?

On December 1, 2024, my life changed forever. I was in the hospital fighting for my life and struggling to breathe. While lying in that hospital bed, I realized something that broke my heart. I had spent my entire career serving others as a nurse, but when I needed help, I was not protected.

My job placed me on unpaid medical leave, and eventually I lost my coverage. I was going through a divorce and had two children in private school. My greatest fear was not what would happen to me. It was what would happen to my children if I did not make it. For the first time, I realized how financially vulnerable my family was.

I promised myself that if God gave me another chance, I would never allow my family to be in that position again.

Once I recovered, I earned my life insurance license with one mission, to educate and protect families so they never have to experience what I did. Today I help individuals and families build financial security because I know firsthand that life can change in an instant.

What inspired you to start Sound Mind Financial Solutions, and what is the mission behind your business?

I started Sound Mind Financial Solutions because I realized many families were never taught how money really works. We are taught how to earn a paycheck, but not how to protect our income, grow our money, or create generational wealth.

My mission is simple. I want to educate families first and then help them make informed financial decisions that fit their goals. I believe financial education changes lives, and when people understand their options, they can build a stronger future for themselves and their children.

Understanding Life Insurance, Financial Education, and Generational Wealth

As someone who is passionate about helping families build generational security, what are some of the biggest financial misconceptions or challenges you see people facing today?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that life insurance is only for when someone passes away. Depending on the policy, some life insurance can also provide benefits while you are living if you experience certain qualifying illnesses.

Another misconception is that annuities and Indexed Universal Life policies are only for wealthy people. Many everyday families can benefit from learning about these financial tools.

Unfortunately, too many people wait until retirement or a health crisis before they begin planning. Financial education gives people choices, and choices create opportunities. My goal is to help families learn about their options before it is too late.

How Service, Faith, Nursing, and Advocacy Shape Her Work

Your background spans faith, nursing, business, military service, and advocacy. How have those experiences shaped the way you serve your clients and community?

I proudly served in the United States Navy, earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Business Administration, and have spent my life serving others through healthcare, ministry, advocacy, and now financial services.

Whether I was caring for patients as a Registered Nurse, ministering to families, advocating for survivors of domestic violence, or helping clients protect their financial future, my purpose has always been the same, to serve people with integrity, compassion, and excellence.

I see myself in the people I serve because they are often the ones who spend their lives taking care of everyone else. My nursing background helps me educate and simplify complex topics.

My business education helps me understand financial strategy. My faith reminds me to always put people before profits. Together, these experiences have shaped the way I care for my clients and my community.

What Financial Empowerment Means for Creating a Lasting Legacy

What does financial empowerment mean to you, and why do you believe it is such an important part of creating a lasting legacy?

Financial empowerment means having the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about your money instead of living in fear or uncertainty. It means protecting your family, preparing for unexpected situations, and creating opportunities that can benefit future generations.

To me, a legacy is not simply about leaving money behind. It is about leaving your family with security, wisdom, and a stronger foundation than the one you started with. I want families to break cycles instead of repeating them.

Building a Stronger Financial Future After Difficult Circumstances

What advice would you give to someone who has experienced difficult life circumstances but wants to build a stronger financial future for themselves and their family?

Do not let your current situation define your future.

I know what it feels like to face uncertainty, but I also know that one decision can change the direction of your life.

If you do nothing else, make sure your family is protected with life insurance.

Then commit to learning about money.

Read books, take classes, ask questions, and learn about financial tools such as annuities and Indexed Universal Life policies so you can make informed decisions for yourself and your family.

You do not have to become wealthy overnight. Small, consistent decisions made today can change the future of your family for generations.

The Future of Sound Mind Financial Solutions

Looking ahead, what are your goals for Sound Mind Financial Solutions, and what impact do you hope to make in the lives of those you serve?

My goal is to help create generational wealth one family at a time. I especially want to reach communities that have historically had less access to financial education and show them that building wealth is possible with the right knowledge, planning, and guidance.

I want Sound Mind Financial Solutions to become more than a financial services company. I want it to become a trusted resource where families can learn, ask questions without feeling judged, and make informed decisions with confidence.

If I can help families leave the next generation in a better position than where they started, then I know I have fulfilled the purpose God placed on my life.

Helping Families Build a Lasting Financial Legacy

Tamika Harris's journey is a reminder that some of our most meaningful work can grow from the moments that challenge us most.

What began as a personal realization about her own family's financial vulnerability has evolved into a mission centered on education, preparation, and helping others understand the importance of protecting their financial future.

Through Sound Mind Financial Solutions, Tamika hopes to make financial education more accessible, particularly for families and communities that may not have traditionally had access to these conversations and resources.

Her goal is not simply to help people prepare for today, but to encourage families to think about what they can build and leave behind for generations to come.

As Tamika continues growing Sound Mind Financial Solutions, her message is clear: building a stronger financial future does not have to happen overnight. It can begin with education, asking the right questions, understanding your options, and making intentional decisions, one step and one family at a time.
