Family Getaway at the Caribou Cabin -the best Cashiers, NC vacation rental!

Here’s the kind of trip that sinks into your bones in the best way!

We snuck away to Caribou Cabin in Cashiers, NC, and the whole weekend felt like a warm hug from a good friend. We rolled in just before dinner and did the only reasonable thing—ordered Chile Loco. Their carne asada burritos were chef’s kiss, the perfect fuel for a family exhale. Back at the house, we found our rhythm fast: the kids discovered the downstairs “time warp” game zone (instant obsession), and we claimed our corner of the double-sided fireplace—coffee on one side in the mornings, cozy chats on the other at night.

The next day was for High Falls (Cullowhee Falls)—a real-deal hike with a little rock scrambling the kids absolutely crushed. Proud-parent moment unlocked. We refueled at HAP’s (SO kid friendly and delicious), wandered Trick or Treat Street, and later grabbed incredible pies from Slab Town Pizza.

On our last day we chased waterfalls like kids ourselves—Bridal Veil Falls and Dry Falls (yes, the 70 ft waterfall you can walk behind aka kid heaven!). We window-shopped along Highlands Main Street, and because BBQ is a love language, we made a happy mess at Highlands Smokehouse. On the way back we stopped at Jackson Hole Gem Mine; Isla’s having a necklace made from one of her treasures and she’s been talking about it nonstop. We closed the night with hot chocolate, apple cider, and s’mores by the fire pit, sticky-fingered and completely content!

Why Caribou Cabin worked so well for our family:

  • The layout is a dream for groups: 3 bedrooms/3 baths with space for 6–8 guests, and a private downstairs suite with its own bedroom, bath, kitchenette, and living area—perfect for early risers, nappers, or grandparents who want a little quiet.

  • Big picture windows, vaulted ceilings, and that double-sided fireplace make mornings and evenings feel extra special. We lived on the upper deck—sunrise coffee, sunset chats, repeat.

  • Outside is built for memory-making: a backyard fire pit with Adirondack chairs, plus a gentle five-minute walk down the grassy lawn to a private community dock with a boat slip and two kayaks ready to go. Lake time without logistics is a gift.

  • Location-wise, you’re tucked away but minutes to Cashiers, with Highlands and Sapphire close by—which made our waterfall chasing, Main Street browsing, and gem mining super easy.

The kids still call it “the house with the time warp,” and honestly, same. Caribou Cabin gave us the best blend of adventure and exhale—big views, simple pleasures, and a space that just works for real family life!

If you’re craving a mountain-lake reset where memories come easy—add Caribou Cabin to your list. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, look around the table, and think, This. This is what we’ll remember.
